Cold-as-a-Witch’s-Hat Cones(巫婆冰淇淋)
These little confections make for a fun party activity. There are no set quantities: Make as many or as few as you like, depending on how many eager little hands are waiting. If you can’t find licorice strings, look for Twizzlers Pull-n-Peel and separate some into strands.
Green ice cream, either pistachio or mint–chocolate chip
Candy corn
Chocolate chips
Red or black licorice whips
Pointy sugar cones
(1) Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment and place rounded scoops of ice cream on it. Freeze until firm, at least one hour.
(2) Allow each child to decorate a scoop of ice cream with licorice strings on top for hair, candy corn for a nose, chocolate chips for eyes and red licorice for a mouth. Press a sugar cone on top for a hat, and grin at how cute it is. Flip over and eat immediately!
Chocolate Spider Clusters(巧克力蜘蛛餅)
Makes about 24
Gleaming, red candy eyes add creepy appeal. Before the chocolate sets, pull a few chow mein noodle “legs” upward from each cluster as if they were waving.
1 cup (about 6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
2 cups chow mein noodles
1/4 cup Red Hots or red mini M&Ms
(1) Line 2 baking sheets with wax paper or parchment.
(2) Put the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and melt the chocolate in the microwave: Heat on high for 60 seconds, then stir well. If it’s not quite smooth, heat again in two or three 10-second bursts, stirring well after each. Or melt the chocolate in a double boiler, over just-simmering water, stirring frequently. Avoid overheating, which can cause chocolate to seize up into a stiff mass.
(3) Stir the chow mein noodles into the melted chocolate, and drop the mixture by tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. Press 2 red candies onto one edge of each cluster to make eyes, and lift a few chow mein “legs.” Refrigerate to cool and harden, about 20 minutes, and serve chilled. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
